The castle

It occupies an area of over 10,000 square meters. on the highest part of the country. The recent restoration (1991-1998) has returned a structure that is among the most fascinating, complex and best preserved in the whole Southern Italy. Born as Byzantine Kastron with ecclesial and military constructions on primitive settlements of Arab occupation, it was raped by the Normans who obliterated the Byzantine presence returned to us, in small but significant part, by the last restorations. According to previous historiography, the almost definitive structure of the structure was attributed to Andrea Carafa and his nephews, so much so that it was referred to as “the Carafa Castle”. According to the opinion of the restorers, the construction of the entire mastio, which is then the most striking part, is due to the Angioinians even if this analysis does not all agree. There is no news of changes made by the Ruffo who did not live in the castle, while significant changes are due to the Sculco and, above all, the Grutther who, having failed the need for defense, transformed the keep of the fortress into a noble residence furnishing it with fine decorations by Francesco Jordano. In the castle, in addition to the temporary exhibitions that are constantly set up there, there is the Archaeological Museum, the Documentation and Studies Center of Castles and Fortifications Calabresi, the Museum of weapons and armor, the Museum of vintage clothes and the Museum of Lirica.
The Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art

Located in the Archbishop’s Palace, it preserves one of the most important collections of sacred art existing in Calabria. In the “Places” section the cult buildings that testify the history of Christianity from the catacombs to the first basilicas, from the baptisteries to the Byzantine churches, from the abbatial structures to the post-tridentine cathedrals are treated. The “Objects” section presents ecclesiastical furnishings, jewels (the Angevin gold pin, paintings, sculptures, reliquaries, monstrances and sacred vestments) In the “Documents” section there are liturgical books, parchments (the Bull of Pope Lucius III is famous, 1184) privileges, etc. Important is the section dedicated to the history of the church of San Sasso: from the birth of the metropolis to the institution of the Diocese of Crotone-Santa Severina, in addition, the section of the “Ex voto”, that of the “Paramenti sacri” and the important collection of archaeological finds and coins donated to the Museum by Dr. Francesco De Luca.

The Baptistery

A jewel of Byzantine art, it is the oldest ecclesiastical monument open to worship in Calabria (VII-IX century). Its architectural plan is singular: circular base with inserted Greek cross and eight columns supporting an open umbrella dome.

Cathedral

The current cathedral church is dedicated to Santa Anastasia, the patron saint of the village. Erected by Archbishop Ruggiero of Stefanunzia (1274-1295), it was modified and beautified by other archbishops, mainly from the Berlingieri in the early eighteenth century. The portal, the work of southern stonemasons, is original of the XIII century.

Santa Filomena

Built in the Norman period (XII century), but for its scheme and for the dome with oriental intonation it is considered “the last glow of the Byzantine civilization in Calabria”.

The square

Built in the eighties, it has an ellipse with a wind rose in the middle and a whole series of drawings: planets, alchemical symbols, the cycles of gold, metals, time and seasons.
